The long version: 5k run first thing

Where the claim comes from

David Goggins turned the pre-dawn run into a religion: callous the mind, do the thing you hate first, and nothing else that day can touch you. Jocko's "discipline equals freedom" is the same idea in fewer words. Brian Tracy's "eat the frog" is the productivity version. And in the last few years the longevity crowd, Peter Attia especially, has made steady-state cardio the most recommended habit on the internet.
Two claims are stacked here. One is that daily cardio is good for you, which is about as settled as anything in health science gets. The other is that doing it first, before you are awake enough to negotiate, changes the rest of the day. The second one is the experiment.

What I am actually testing

Whether the placement matters. Whether a run before 6:30 produces a measurably better day than the same run at 5pm would, and whether a non-runner can hold 30 consecutive days of 5k without breaking something.

What the research says, as far as I have read

πŸ”Ž
These are pointers I am checking, not proof. Nothing gets quoted on camera until I have read it properly.
  • A single session of moderate exercise lifts mood and sharpens executive function for a window of a couple of hours afterwards (Basso and Suzuki, 2017, review in Brain Plasticity). That window is where the deep work block sits.
  • Regular aerobic exercise has an antidepressant effect large enough that meta-analyses treat it as a treatment rather than a lifestyle tip (Schuch et al., 2016, Journal of Psychiatric Research).
  • The running injury literature is consistent on one thing: sudden jumps in weekly volume are the main risk. Going from zero to 35k a week is exactly that jump. This is the habit most likely to end in a physio's office.

What would change my mind

  • KEEP if run-day ratings average 7 or above, the deep work rating is higher on days the run happened, and I finish the 30 days uninjured.
  • COPE if by week two it is a 4 and I am quietly swapping in walks and calling them runs.
  • KEEP, but modified if the effect holds at 3k, or every other day, or at a walk, which would mean the placement is the lever and the distance is ego.

What to watch in the log

Shins by day four. The first wet morning. The first day it is not awful.
