The long version: Meal prep and track every calorie

Where the claim comes from

Bodybuilding, mostly. "If it fits your macros", MyFitnessPal, the Sunday meal prep photo with twelve identical containers. The slogan everyone attributes to Peter Drucker, "what gets measured gets managed", did the rest. The claim is that body composition is arithmetic, and once the numbers are honest the results are inevitable.
For me this one has receipts on both sides. Tracking is how the first transformation happened. It is also how I ended up eating the same three meals for a year, panicking when a plan changed, and being weird about food for a long time afterwards.

What I am actually testing

Whether I can run tracking for 30 days as a tool rather than a rulebook. Adherence is the easy metric. The real one is what the evening notes say about food: whether it stays a system, or turns back into avoidance.

What the research says, as far as I have read

These are pointers I am checking, not proof. Nothing gets quoted on camera until I have read it properly.
  • Self-monitoring of food is one of the most consistent predictors of weight loss in the literature (Burke, Wang and Sevick, 2011, Journal of the American Dietetic Association). This part is not controversial.
  • In people with a history of disordered eating, calorie-tracking apps have been linked to worse symptoms, and some users say the app contributed (Levinson et al., 2017, Eating Behaviors). That is the side of the evidence that applies to me.
  • Meal prep itself is barely studied as a separate thing. Its effect is mostly about removing decisions, and that is a habit-design argument, not a nutrition one.

What would change my mind

  • KEEP if I log at least 25 of 30 days, hit the target most days, and the journal never mentions food anxiety.
  • COPE if the notes start showing rigidity, skipped meals out, or compensating for a bad day with a starved one. The moment that shows up, this habit is over regardless of the numbers.
  • KEEP, but modified if prepped meals without gram-level tracking hold the same result, which is where I suspect this ends.

What to watch in the log

Week two, when the containers start staying empty. The first meal out with someone. Any day where the rating is high and the note is short.
