The long version: Wake up at 5:30am

Where the claim comes from

Robin Sharma sold it as The 5 AM Club. Jocko Willink posts a photo of his watch at 04:30 most mornings. Every "morning routine of a millionaire" video is a version of the same idea: the hour before the world wakes up is the only hour that belongs to you. The version I grew up on was gym culture, where the 5am session was proof you wanted it more than the people still asleep.
Underneath the marketing there is a real mechanism, and it is not about the number on the clock. Sleep researchers care about two things: a consistent wake time, and light in the eyes soon after it. Both anchor the body clock. Whether the anchor sits at 5:30 or 7:00 is mostly a matter of chronotype and what your evenings look like.

What I am actually testing

Not whether waking early is good. Whether a fixed 5:30 wake, paid for with a 22:00 bedtime, holds up for 30 days next to a run, a work block and late edit nights, and whether it earns its keep once the novelty is gone. The bedtime is the variable. The alarm is just the receipt.

What the research says, as far as I have read

πŸ”Ž
These are pointers I am checking, not proof. Nothing gets quoted on camera until I have read it properly.
  • Irregular sleep timing, not short sleep alone, is linked to worse mood, performance and a later body clock (Phillips et al., 2017, Scientific Reports). Consistency is the thing.
  • Morning light is the strongest signal for setting the clock, which is why the run goes straight after the alarm.
  • Forcing a night owl onto a lark's schedule produces "social jetlag" (Wittmann et al., 2006, Chronobiology International), the same fog as flying two time zones every weekend. That is the risk if 5:30 is simply the wrong number for me.

What would change my mind

  • KEEP if by day 14 I am waking before the alarm most days, averaging at least 7 hours in bed, and the evening ratings sit at 7 or above.
  • COPE if I am under six and a half hours of sleep on a third of the nights and the deep work block is the thing paying for it.
  • KEEP, but modified if the fixed wake works but the number does not, and 6:00 with the same 22:00 bedtime gives the same result at a lower cost.

What to watch in the log

The nights after editing sessions. The first weekend. And whether the rating tracks the bedtime rather than the alarm.
